Hoxton Hotel

London, 2021

Nigel Coates was commissioned to art direct and design the masterplan for an innovative hotel in the ultra-fashionable Hoxton district of east London. His concept hinges on fast access and convenience for people on the move, people who are used to have Internet access everywhere and look for convenience at every step. Guests arrive at a comfortable lobby with vintage leather armchairs and a roaring fire, but they will check in with their credit card. Many of hotels services are fully automated, with online ordering of room service or business facilities. The biggest challenge for Coates was to design both the rooms and the shared spaces with a no-fuss stylish, contemporary feel. Space was to be as cleverly used as possible; the sofa in each bedroom, designed by Coates, straddles a corner of the room and includes a pouffe that can also be used at the built in desk. The hotel has proved to be resounding success and offers some of the most desirable accommodation anywhere in the capital.
